In my opinion, the Big Green Egg is an excellent grill and smoker, however being a larger and more established brand compared to Kamado Joe, I’m not sure they’ve really had the incentive to focus on further research, development, and most importantly, innovation. Kamado Joe, on the other hand, being an upstart for all intents and purposes

I just "upgraded" my 2009 Large Big Green Egg with a new spring band, Smokeware Cap and Gauge, High-Que Gold Standard gasket, and a perforated intake door. The new hinge on the spring band is similar to the X-Lge Big Green Egg. They have relocated the springs to the outside of the hinge. The only downside seems to be that the dome doesn't open
I miss my XL at times but I sold it as I didn't use it very often. I found I used my Large 95% of the time or some other smaller egg. The XL was too big to fire up just for the wife and I for basic cooks. I do miss the XL for bigger cooks but not not enough to justify keeping it around.
Big Green Egg has been producing these Kamado Style grills for decades. This one is the most popular of their models and is big enough to cook one 20-pound turkey. What makes this unit great is that while it can produce high temperatures due to the focused heat of its ceramic shell, it can also hold low temperatures making it a great smoker.
